Session Layer Session Layer
The session layer protocol coordinates the information transmission between endpoints during a communication session. The session layer receives requests for transmission from an application layer and converts it into network addressable data formats that can be transferred through a network or transmission line. The session layer usually establishes a communication session, coordinates the overall control of the session (such as handling retransmission and restart requests), and termination procedures. The location of the session layer within the protocol stacks varies dependent on the protocol. The session layer is layer 5 in the open system interconnection (OSI) protocol layer model.
