A presence service allows a user to subscribe to presence information regarding others, so that the user may see when other users are connected to a network such as the Internet. By employing presence and messaging software users are able to build 'buddy lists' which indicate the current status of the people in the list. When another user is shown as available it is possible to use an Instant Messaging (IM) service to send and receive real-time messages.
