![]() A redirection server assists in the establishment of communication sessions by providing alternative locations where the designated recipient can be found. The redirect server does not initiate any action. It only provides information back to the requesting device as to the potential locations of the designated recipient. ![]() ![]() This figure shows the operation of a SIP redirect server in a SIP network. In this example, a user agent's proxy server receives a request from a client that specifies the SIP address of a recipient's address that is located on a redirect server (such as a company iPBX system). The proxy server forwards this invite request to the redirect server. The redirect server looks at the SIP address in the request and fetches from a database the current location information for this address (an IP address). The redirect server returns a response address to the originating proxy server and this allows the proxy server to redirect its invite request to the required destination. ![]()
