Location Server - LS Location Server - LS
Location servers provide information regarding the location of resources that are located within a network (such as the Internet or within a SIP system). Location servers are typically databases that maintain a binding (mapping) for each registered user. This binding maps the address of the user to one or more addresses at which the user can be currently reached. The Location Service supports user mobility within a communication system. In a SIP system, the Location Service database is updated as a result of SIP User Agents performing a registration.
Location Server - LS SIP Location Server Operation
SIP Location Server Operation Diagram
This figure shows how a location server may be used to assist in the routing of calls in a SIP system. This example shows that a user agent has requested the initiation of a communication session with another user. When the invite request is received by the proxy server, the proxy server sends a location query to the location server to requests the current IP address of SIP:susan@example.com. When the location server returns the last registered address of SIP:susan@example.com, the proxy server forwards the invite request to Susan's User Agent.
